'Collections' - CD cases (continued)

After my first works with the CD cases, I re-worked two of the three paintings, this time trying for a multi-layered approach to the design. This was very much as simplistic as the original stencil method but it was nevertheless a wholesome step in early experimentation.

My second attempt for mutli-layering was based on elevating each shape either partially or entirely. The point being that this would create a more 3D feel compared to the previous method. Although this seems to work well enough with these abstract collectives, I feel it would only be superfluous applied to any other design. Still, I'm curious to see if I may work from this in future projects.

My First Project Brief: 'Collections' - CD cases

The first project set for me at college was entitled 'Collections'. I explored three main concepts around collections: what kind of collections exist, how they there are arranged and what purpose they hold. For starters, I focused on what collections I had myself. From that, CDs quickly became my subject. At first, I looked at how they were shaped and how their dimensions varied (even if the difference was minor).
From left to right: typical jewel CD case, alternative jewel case and digipak.
The simple idea occured to me to trace around the CD cases and make the drawn shapes overlap each other. From that, I painted in the new shapes from the overlapping 'stencil work' for what was a very simplistic abstract series of paintings.

My first attempt with this method (shown to the left) gave me some overall idea to the composition of future images produced this way. In addition, I learnt that it would be best if I primed the surface unto which I was going to be painting.
Although the photo might not make it clear, the original dark tone of the card I painted on drained a significant amount of the paint colours.

I never was expecting anything spectacular from this but it certainly worked to see me work on something beyond merely drawing. Though, whether or not painting would really prove to be an accessible media for me was yet to be known.

Start-up for an Archive

As a start to my collection, I aim to upload a number of my college-based artworks some time later in the summer. I intend to actually upload a mass of my older work each post, slowing down once I get more up to date with what I've been producing.
Since I was incredibly new to art as a study in my college course, a lot of what I produced, especially in the early stage, is very experimental and most certainly hit-and-miss in several ways.
